Brufftopian have been studying measurement and conversions in Math. Students have been learning to convert weight, distance, and volume using the US Customary System and the Metric System. Most students left the math sessions thinking aloud, “Why don’t we use the Metric System in the United States? It’s much simpler.” I couldn’t help but agree with them.
As students investigated tools, they began to notice subtle differences. The meter sticks in the classroom also had inches on another side. After making this connection, students learned a yard is less than a meter. Check out the student discoveries below.
Games and Activities during Lessons
The math block was incredibly packed. Students also had a chance to make connections to other math units. Studying fractions and decimals helped every student make connections in the metric system. Students enjoyed playing games like “Roll for a Yard,” “Roll for a Meter,” creating Capacity Creatures, and playing “Making a Pound.”
