Math Specialist Comes to Brufftopia

In Bowman, students are incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by excellent teachers. One particular teacher who is new to the building is doing fabulous work in math. Mrs. Roof is her name and numbers are her game!

Entering the classroom is something she really is excited to do. She has been in the classroom observing, working in small groups, lending her expertise, coaching teachers to use better language, and teaching whole class lessons. To put it bluntly, she does it all.

Lesson Breakdown

  1. Activating student background knowledge lead students to ask great questions.
  2. Students asked questions to frame their thinking.
  3. As a whole class, we made guidelines and assumptions we’d all agree upon.
  4. Independently, students worked towards figuring out how many cases there were in the display.
  5. In groups of 3 or less, students shared their strategies, worked together to complete their work, and came to agreements.
  6. As a whole class, we summarized our learning with shared strategies of what worked and didn’t work.
  7. Students made connections to their work with open arrays, estimating and multiplication.
