Brufftopians launched the math unit of Perimeter and Area. Students completed the three at lesson by estimating, multiplying and dividing to come up with an answer.
The math lesson began with students started on the rug. Each student watched a short video that showed a teacher dumping a pile of tile onto a table top. Students continued watching as the teacher began to place tiles on the perimeter of the table. Students were encouraged to share their wonders and noticings. By the end of the first act, students had selected the question, “Are there enough tiles to cover the table?”
As we moved into the second act, students were given the dimensions of the table and the tiles. With that information, students began to use division, multiplication and subtraction to solve the question, “Are there enough tiles to cover the table?”
Students were thrilled to work together to solve math problems. This real world application (Piles of Tiles) of estimating, multiplication, division, subtraction gave multiple access points for all students, it provided extensions for students who needed challenges, and it introduced new concepts in a friendly way.
