“Katie, do we have enough chenberries to send to the castle?” Olympia asked.
Looking on her clipboard, Katie realized they had harvested too many chenberries. “Olympia, gathered too many chenberries.” Chloe stopped running and looked at her load and began crying. She knew inside if they harvested too much, the Khan would demand they send more chenberries each month. If they didn’t harvest enough chenberries, the Khan would throw them in chains and make them become builders.
“We can’t do anything right.” Lucy said. “When we harvest too much the Khan expects it from then on, when we harvest too little, the Khan punishes us by taking one of our friends to become builders.”
Anna looked around at her four farming friends, Olympia, Lucy, Chloe, and Katie. She stared at Olympia who was the captain of the group and made sure everyone had what they needed. If the group came up short Olympia would feel personally responsible. The Khan promised to make another farmer a builder if they didn’t harvest enough chenberries. Olympia had been working them harder than ever to make sure it didn’t happen.
